Lehman Recycle

Product / Illustration
Why is recycling a good idea and of importance in an on-campus cafeteria? At Lehman College, New York, we wanted to ensure that the students were recycling their waste prudently. To this effect, visual cues derived from the cafeteria were translated into nudges that would encourage sustainable behaviour. Nudges are psychologically informed tools designed to promote behavioural change in order to improve health and well-being. For the design language, illustrations of food and rubbish items were affixed to waste bins and positioned at appropriate locations.

Experiments

How do we design the waste bin signage? Do we make it bigger, add emojis, or borrow Whole Foods’ shadow box idea? Do we include a poster atop the signage, and if yes, what type of nudging tool do we use? We can shape behaviour via loss aversion, social norms, or a simple reminder on how we are doing it in comparison to other people.

Final

The problem lies in making recycling easier for people who do not pay much attention to its need. We have seen that a simple nudge to our everyday environment can be an effective way to boost recycling rates. Simply and strategically placing the bins, making them attractive/more visible and accessible and moving them closer to the place of study, cafeteria or work enhances this experience. The illustrated elements on the bins facilitated the bridging of this gap between nudge and action, by drawing visual reference to objects found in the cafeteria.
